How it all began...
Once upon a time there was a group of mature adults who thought it would be a great idea to get two young individuals in their late teens to establish an activity club for Muslim kids over the summer of 1997. With much eagerness, the two were delighted at the prospects of hanging out with young kids at the local youth centre for a couple of hours on a Saturday for the next six weeks. With a £50.00 budget the two headed into town and returned home with bulging bags of art materials and sore arms the following day…this was the start of something beautiful!
The first session held in July 1997 at the Union St Youth Centre attracted only 9 children. Yet, as the weeks passed word spread of the new and fast growing activity club for Muslim girls; the first of its kind in Oxford. After the initial six weeks were up the two teens were quite happy to resume to normal ‘Saturday life’ bringing the Club to an end. Yet the eager parents of Oxford had their own plans, the two were ‘bullied’ into continuing the Club beyond the summer holidays.
"A relaxed and friendly Islamic atmosphere"
After the initial six weeks a small but committed team of young Muslimahs took the role of ‘youth workers’ a little more seriously. The aim of the Club was and still is to provide authentic Islamic education through stimulating and exciting activities which all young people enjoy. A relaxed and friendly Islamic atmosphere has meant that the girls have a safe place to hang out, to share their worries and concerns and more importantly to increase their love for the deen. The Club is aimed at girls between the ages of 5-14 (if the parents had their way it would have been from birth to 14!).
Sessions run from 11.00 – 1.00pm, attracting girls from all over Oxfordshire. Girls from all backgrounds flock to the centre bringing a rich and vibrant feel to the place. We welcome girls from all / no faiths to join us at the Club.
The Muslim Saturday Club is a non profit voluntary run organisation.
Alhamdulillah, during the summer of 2007 the Club celebrated its 10th anniversary. A reunion style party was thrown for over 300 students and their families making it an evening to remember. |
